AsahiGuard E-SERIES products are a recent addition to the Asahi Guard product line. The new E-SERIES products offer the same high performance characteristics as our existing line, while not containing perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), *1 longer chain length-perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) or their precursors.

Asahi Glass began distribution of "Asahi Guard" products in 1971, as a line of fluorinated water/oil repellent finishing agents. Asahi Guard® is a registered trademark of Asahi Glass Co., Ltd.
Our customers have widely used Asahi Guard products as finishing agents for textile, paper, nonwoven fabrics and leather. Customers depend on Asahi Guard for its excellent water/oil repellent properties and superior durability. Asahi Guard provides the strong features of a fluorinated water/oil repellent finishing agent that are not available through paraffin or silicone.

In April 2003, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a preliminary risk assessment for PFOA*2 and started a public process to identify and generate additional information to better understand the sources of PFOA and the pathways of human exposure. PFOA is persistent in the environment and is found at very low levels both in the environment and in the blood of the general U.S. population. In January 2006, the EPA approached manufacturers of fluorinated resins and fluorinated water/oil repellent agents to participate in a program for further reducing emissions and product content of PFOA, longer chain length-PFCAs*3 and their precursors*4.

Also, at about the same time, Asahi Glass announced that, through its own research and development activities, it had developed the AsahiGuard E-SERIES of high performance water/oil repellent agents for fabrics and paper that do not contain PFOA, longer chain length-PFCAs or their precursors. Asahi Glass has obtained regulatory clearances for these products under the "Chemical Substances Control Law" *5 in Japan and the "Toxic Substance Control Act in the United States (TSCA). Asahi Glass is also pursuing additional registrations in Europe and Canada.

PFOA is used as a polymerization aid in the production of fluorinated resins and is contained in fluorinated water/oil repellant agents in trace amounts. PFOA has been detected at very low levels throughout the general population, wildlife and environment. As of January 2005, in order to ensure that the most rigorous science is used in the EPA's ongoing evaluation of PFOA, the EPA announced that it was seeking scientific peer review from an outside panel of scientific experts on the Agency's draft PFOA risk assessment. The EPA will use these recommendations as it revises the assessment.

Chemicals having a similar structure as PFOA with a larger number of carbon atoms.. For example, Perfluoro nonanoic acid with carbon number 9 or Perfluoro decanoic acid with carbon number 10 is included.




A substance that changes to a different substance by decomposition. Here we give the generic name to the substances that change to PFOA or longer chain length PFCAs.
