Our Story

Overview

The Asahi Glass Company was founded in 1907 by Toshiya Iwasaki, the second son of the second president of the original Mitsubishi Corporation. Under him, it succeeded in the first Japanese production of sheet glass.His pioneering spirit, summarized in the basic principle "Never take the easy way out--address the difficulties," was the driving force behind Asahi Glass's mastery of a succession of difficult business challenges and the company's subsequent dynamic growth.

Establishment

1907

Asahi Glass Company established in Amagasaki, Hyogo Pref.

 

 


1909

Registered the company's diamond shaped logo

 

Belgian-type hand-blown sheet glass manufacture begins. (The first such production in Japan)

I Pioneer Spirit

1914

The first shipment of sheet glass exported to England.

 

 


1916

 

 

Production of refractories begins.


1917

Headquarters moved to Tokyo.

 

Soda ash first produced at Kitakyushu by the ammonium method.


1918

Asahi Glass Laboratory established in Usigome,Tokyo.

 

 


1925

Shoko Glass Co., Ltd. established in China.

 

 

II Modernize

1928

 

 

Production of ordinary sheet glass by the Fourcault process begins.


1933

The Asahi Foundation for Chemical Industry Promotion (now the Asahi Glass Foundation) established to commemorate our 25th anniversary.

 

Caustic soda production using the lime process begins.


1938

 

 

Production of tempered and laminated glass begins.


1944

Asahi Glass and Nippon Chemical Industries merge to form Mitsubishi Chemical Industries.

 

 

III The Post War

1950

Mitsubishi Chemical Industries divided into Asahi Glass, Nippon Kasei Kogyo (now Mitsubishi Chemical Corp.), and Shinko Rayon (now Mitsubishi Rayon Co., Ltd.).

 

Production of fertilizer grade ammonium chloride begins.


1952

Asahi Glass invested in Iwaki Glass Co.

 

 


1954

Asahi Special Glass established.

 

Manufacture of glass bulbs for TV picture tubes.(Asahi Special Glass)

Production of double-glazing units begins.

IV Rapid Progress

1956

Asahi Processed Glass established.

Asahi Fiberglass Co., Ltd. established.

The Indo-Asahi Glass Co., Ltd. established.

 

Production of automotive glass begins. (Asahi Processed Glass )

Expand the fiberglass business. (Asahi Fiberglass Co., Ltd. )

Production of glass bulbs for TV picture tubes begins.


1957

Asahi Glass Scholarship Foundation established to Commemorate our 50th anniversary.

 

Production of heat-absorbing glass begins.


1960

 

 

Production of ion-exchange membrane begins.


1961

 

 

Asahi Glass moves into organic chemicals, manufacturing propylene oxide and propylene glycol.


1962

Japan Siporex established.

Asahi Special Glass and Asahi Processed Glass amalgamated.

 

Advanced to ALC business. (Japan Siporex )


1963

Thai-Asahi Glass Public Co., Ltd. established.

 

 


1964

Thai Caustic Soda Co. (current THASCO Chemical Co., Ltd.) established.

 

Production of fluorocarbon begins.

Production of chlorine products and electrolytic caustic soda begins.

V Overseas

1965

New research laboratory opened in Yokohama.

 

 


1966

Asahi Glass and the U.S. firm PPG set up Asahi Penn Chemical Co., Ltd.

 

Manufacturing of chlorine products. (Asahi Penn Chemical Co., Ltd.)

Production of borosilicate glass begins. (Iwaki Glass Co., Ltd.)

Float glass production begins.

Automotive glass production upgraded.

Production of FRV (glass fiber reinforced PVC resin) begins.

P.T. Asahimas Flat Glass Co., Ltd. set up in Indonesia.

Pacific Glass Corp. established in Taiwan.

1973

AA Glass Corp. established in the U.S.A.

 

GRC technology acquired from the U.K. firm Pilkington Brothers and GRC operations begin.


1974

Asahi-Olin Ltd. Established.

 

Moves into the production of glass delay lines.


1975

 

 

Production of water and oil repellents (Asahi Guard) begins.

Production of Aflon COP (fluorinated resins) begins.

Caustic soda manufacturing process by ion-exchange membrane method developed.


1976

Asahi Glass and Mitsubishi Electric set up Optrex Corp.

 

Started up production of LCD panels. (Optrex Corp)


1977

 

 

Production and marketing of alkali-resistant glass fiber begins.


1979

Asahi Glass invests in MCIS Safety Glass Sdn. Bhd. in Malaysia.

 

 


1980

 

 

The AZEC System of caustic soda manufacturing is developed.

VII New Century

1981

Asahi Fluoropolymer (now r Asahi-ICI Fluoropolymers Co., Ltd.) established as a joint venture with U.K. firm ICI to make fluorinated resins.

Asahi Glass acquired Glaverbel S.A. and MaasGlas B.V., glass companies in Belgium and the Netherlands.

 

Production and marketing of fluorinated resins. (Asahi-ICI Fluoropolymers Co., Ltd.)


1983

 

 

Production of siding boards for houses begins.


1984

Asahi Glass acquired invested in Nippon Carbide and ELNA.

 

Production of solvent-soluble fluoropolymer for paints (Lumiflon) begins.


1985

AP Technoglass Co. established in the U.S.A.

Asahi TechnoVision Pte. Ltd. established in Singapore

 

Production of non-alkali glass and synthetic quartz begins.


1986

 

 

Production of heat reflective glass (Sunlux) begins.


1987

Asahi Komag Co., Ltd. created in joint venture with U.S. firm Komag

 

 


1988

Corning Asahi Video Products Company (U.S.) established.

 

 


1989

Siam Asahi Technoglass Co., Ltd. established in Thailand.

 

Chlorofluorocarbon alternative (HCFC 225) developed.


1991

Asahi Glass Foundation creates the "Blue Planet Prize" to honor those who help solve environmental problems.

Asahi Glass participated in Splintex S.A. (Belgium).

Asahi Glass joined PPG (U.S.) to invest in Guandong Float Glass Co., Ltd. (China).

 

TFT-LCD glass substrates production begins. (Advanced Display Co., Ltd. )


1992

Dalian Float Glass Co., Ltd. established in China.

Floatglass India Ltd. established in India.

Acquired AFG Industries, Inc. of the U.S.A.

 

Production and sales of sunlight collection and distribution system begin .

Asahi Glass invests in Qinhuangdao Haiyan Safety Glass Co., Ltd. in China

 

Start of automotive glass business in China.

Trial sales of PYRAN fireproof glass, with low thermal coefficient of expansion, begin.


1996

Opened corporate website on the Internet..

P.T. Video Display Glass Indonesia established.

AGPR Inc. is established in the United States

AG Electronic Materials, Inc. is established in the United States.

 



Start of commercial sales of PD200 glass for plasma display panels.


1997

Founded Asahi Allied Signals.

Video Monitores de Mexico, S.A. de C.V. established in Mexico.

 

Production and sales of flat-faced TV tube glass bulbs "Tripled" commence.

Fluoro-resin plastic optical fibers with gigabit communication data throughput capabilities are developed.


1998

Wakasa AGC Fine Chemicals Co. established for production of pharmaceutical ingredients.

AP Technoglass de Mexico, S.A. de C.V. established in Mexico.

 

Glass for optical switches is developed


1999

Purchased ICI'S Fluoropolymers business , Asahi Glass Fluoropolymers Co., Ltd.USA and Asahi Glass Fluoropolymers Co., Ltd. UK established.

 

 


2000

Korea Autoglass Corporation (a joint venture with Kumgang Korea Chemical Co., Ltd.) is established.

Asahi Glass Fine Techno Taiwan Co., Ltd. is established.

The Asahi Glass Environmental Report is published.

 

Sale of Lucina (Perfluorinated Optical Fiber) begins.

Work begins on full-scale implementation of the Asahi Glass S. Pombe Expressin (ASPEX) system for protein production.

New optical fiber developed for next-generation wavelength-division multiplexing.

Seals of SECU-RE crime-prevention glass begin.

Low-reflectance and anti-condensation glass for car windshields is developed.


2001

Introduced stock option system.

Sales of Super Vision Glass(CLARITIA) high-transparent glass begin.


2002

Creation of AGC Group Vision, "Look Beyond"

Introduced an in-house company system

The executive officer committee system of corporate governance is adopted.

The company's ceramics business is spun off to the newly founded Asahi Class Ceramics Co., Ltd.

 

Sales of EXCELSIOR window systems with a choice of grades begin.

Asahi Glass Company and NTT Advanced Technology Corporation cooperate successfully to develop perfluorinated optical waveguides.

COOLVERRE windshield glass, which cuts out infrared radiation, is developed.

Ceramics Diesel Particulate Filters for cleaning diesel vehicle exhaust gases are developed.


2004

" JIKKO " management policy introduced.

 

Fluon® highly functional ETFE fluoropolymer film utilized at the Munich stadium, the venue for the opening match of the football (soccer) world competition in Germany.


2005

Electronics & Energy General Division newly established.

 

 


2006

 

 

Fluon® highly functional ETFE fluoropolymer film selected for the main stadium and the venue for aquatics events at the Summer Games in Beijing.


2007

Group brand unified as “AGC.”

Asahi Glass Company’s 100th anniversary
