Approach to Industrial Safety & Security

In addition to striving to prevent accidents and other crises (unforeseen accidents), the AGC Group is working under the AGC Group Basic Industry Safety & Security Policy to prevent the escalation of accidents that do occur by promoting countermeasures to deal promptly and accurately with such crises.

As part of its industrial safety and security activities, the Group has been working to reduce risks and reinforce preventative measures against accidents by applying the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle in its integrated Environmental Management System (EMS) since 2011. Based on the action plans drawn up by the corporate organization, the General Affairs Division, each business division will promote fire prevention, countermeasures for industrial safety accidents and risk assessment for natural disasters. In addition to these, the Group will strive for continuous improvement through internal audits.

Efforts like these were recognized: the Ise Chemicals Corporation’s Kujyukuri Mine won the 2011 Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s National Mining Safety Prize, and AGC Asahi Glass’s Togane Mine won the Minister’s Award in 2013.

AGC Group Basic Industry Safety & Security Policy

The AGC Group, in the pursuit of “Look Beyond” carries out the following activities for industrial safety & security under the principle that industrial safety and site safety are part of its responsibility towards the local community as a corporate citizen.

  1. The AGC Group shall comply with all laws, ordinances, treaties and standards etc. concerning industrial safety and securities, both nationally and locally.
  2. The AGC Group shall carry out activities for industrial safety & security to prevent accidents or disaster from occurring, and shall strive for continual improvement.
  3. The AGC Group shall make efforts to communicate with stakeholders such as the local community.

Efforts Toward the Prevention of Fires and Recurrences

The AGC Group strives to continuously improve fire prevention activities at both its domestic and overseas locations through environmental safety preservation audits and similar activities. These are implemented principally by each business division and Asahi Glass Internal Audit Division, under the control of the integrated EMS. In 2015, 40 fires occurred within the AGC Group, but due to appropriate initial firefighting activities, there were no human casualties. In addition, the AGC Asahi Glass Kashima Plant and AGC Asahi Glass Chiba Plant acquired certification as Accredited Completion/Safety Inspection Executors under the High-Pressure Gas Safety Act.

In the future, the Group will continuously promote fire outbreak and reoccurrence prevention measures.

Since 2012, the AGC Group has implemented its Serious Accident Eradication Project as a means to improve measures for eliminating and reducing the risk of environmental and industrial accidents. Through the project, it identified issues related to risks that are particularly high across the Group, particularly molten glass leaks and explosions, and drafted countermeasures. The Group continues to work towards reducing the risk of leaks and explosions, which is the main theme of the project.

Moreover, the Group conducts regular emergency drills at all sites. For example, at AGC's facility for education and training, the AGC Monozukuri Training Center, students participate in unannounced evacuation drills. By doing so, it is possible to confirm how people act during emergencies, and ascertain if unexpected risks will arise during them. Emergency measures are then formulated on the basis of the findings.

Additionally, as part of business continuity management (BCM), training aligned with business continuity plans (BCP) which was formulated at each site is being implemented. Through this training, BCPs are reviewed and points for improvement are considered.
