Our lives and lifestyles are very much dependent on the bountifulness of nature, which stems from ecosystems and biodiversity. We believe conserving biodiversity is synonymous with conserving the natural capital that forms the basis of daily life and business activities. In other words, a loss of natural capital and biodiversity would jeopardize our ability to continue conducting day-to-day life and business.
In addition, the Group believes that minimizing all of its environmental impacts directly affects the conservation of biodiversity, given that all global environmental problems, such as climate change, water risks, resource depletion, and environmental pollution, have a negative impact on biodiversity. It is our belief that the conservation of biodiversity can be achieved by carrying out environmental activities at a range of levels.

Using Cullet to Protect Tidal Flats Rich in Biodiversity

During manufacturing processes, our glass business generates glass waste called cullet. Cullet is mainly recycled as a raw material for asphalt. However, by converting cullet into artificial silica sand, the AGC Takasago Factory is helping regenerate tidal flats through the creation of artificial tidal flats.

With the decrease in the number of tidal flats and a renewed appreciation of their value, many regions have begun attempts to regenerate their tidal flats in recent years. One method of regeneration is the creation of artificial tidal flats, which are designed to cover the seabed with clean sand to reduce the elution of nutrient salts from the seabed, supply oxygen that purifies water, and restore biodiversity.

To use cullet as silica sand for tidal flats, the removal of sharp edges so that people and animals can step on it without being injured and conformity with standards on water-bottom sediment are necessary. Therefore, the cullet that the Takasago Factory generates is only used in artificial tidal flats after being made edgeless through the use of a milling machine and passing elution tests.
