Glass for LCD TVsMore beautiful and clear.

The strict conditions required of the glass that supports visual beauty, and the AGC technology that meets them.

Most of the televisions sold in the world today use TFT (thin-film transistor ) liquid crystal panels to display images.
The glass used in these TFT LCDs requires very high quality, needing to be “transparent, with a smooth and flat surface, and excellent heat resistance.” This makes it a very challenging type of glass to manufacture.

AGC’s glass meets these challenging conditions and is used in a wide range of devices, including LCD televisions, computers, and tablets.

Question1How is the glass used in LCD TVs different from window glass?

The biggest difference is the thickness of the glass.

Window glass used in houses is 3 to 5 mm thick. In contrast, the glass used in TFT LCDs is mainly 0.3 to 0.7 mm thick.

Furthermore, the glass used for TFT LCDs needs to be extremely flat in order to accurately display beautiful images.

How flat does it need to be? If there was a large sheet of glass for LCDs that connected Tokyo and Osaka, the maximum width of the unevenness would be within 50cm.

Question2Is it difficult to make glass for LCD TVs?

Not only must it be thin and flat, but it also needs to minimize internal bubbles and microscopic impurities (dust) that are not visible to the naked eye.

Creating such glass is extremely challenging, and currently, only a few companies worldwide, including AGC, manufacture glass for TFT LCDs.

In addition to LCD televisions, it is used as a substrate material for various displays, including computers, car navigation systems, and tablets.

Question3How big is the glass used in LCD TVs? Is it about the same size as the TV screen?

Companies that manufacture TFT LCD panels attach various components to very large sheets of glass, and then cut them to the actual screen sizes.

The largest sheet of glass made by AGC is about 3m x 3.3m.
This is large enough to hold eight 65-inch screens.

It's thin, flat and huge.
The glass used in LCD TVs is world-class, amazing glass that is packed with advanced technology.

The largest glass is called the “11th Generation”.
Amazingly, it can fit up to 8 screens measuring 65 inches (approximately 143 cm in width and 82 cm in height)!
