Airplanes fly through the sky carrying many people. In fact, the power of AGC's chemistry is at work in unseen places.
Question1What AGC products are used in airplanes?
The products used are AGC's various fluoroproducts. They protect airplanes both inside and out. Fluoropolymers have excellent features such as weather resistance, stain resistance and chemical resistance, and contribute to the flight of airplanes in many ways.

Question2What AGC products are used to protect the 'outside' of the airplane?
AGC's LUMIFLON™ fluoropolymer for paints is used on the exterior of airplanes. Its high 'corrosion resistance' and 'weather resistance', which does not deteriorate over long periods of time even outdoors, protects airplanes flying long distances from the elements. It is also environmentally friendly and reduces maintenance costs, as the time between repaints is longer than with ordinary paints.

Question3What AGC products are used to protect the 'inside' of airplanes?
As with the 'outside' of airplanes, fluoropolymers are also used in the interiors of airplanes.
LUMIFLON™, with its excellent stain resistance and durability, is used for the interior to keep the cabin beautiful.
In addition to LUMIFLON™, AGC's Fluon® fluoropolymers such as ETFE, PTFE and PFA are also used. Taking advantage of fluorine's 'heat resistance', 'electrical properties' and 'mechanical properties', it is used in aircraft cables and other applications.

Question4What is fluoropolymers in the first place?
Fluoropolymers are high-performance plastics made from fluorite. It combines the following functions and is used in various aspects of life.

Resistant to heat and cold, and can be used continuously from -100°C to 260°C*.
*The heat resistance temperature varies depending on the product.

Resistant to most chemicals, and will not change even when exposed to high concentrations of strong acids or strong alkalis. It is also insoluble in solvents.

Has the property of being extremely flame-resistant.

The dielectric constant (the rate at which electricity passes through) is the lowest of all plastics, and there is almost no change in this value depending on the frequency.

It has good sliding properties and low friction.

It is difficult for objects to stick to it, so it is not easily soiled, and any dirt that does stick to it is easy to remove.

It has properties that make it resistant to change and deterioration, even in harsh environments exposed to outdoor sunlight.

Fluoropolymer is highly functional even when compared with other plastics such as PP, nylon 6 and PVC.
Question5Where else are they used besides in airplanes?
In addition to airplanes, AGC's fluoropolymer products are used in a wide range of fields. For example, they are used in automobile cables, optical wiring, parts for semiconductor manufacturing equipment, solar panels and many other products that are familiar to us all.
In the construction field, Lumiflon™ is used in the Tokyo Gate Bridge, Okayama Castle, and the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. And the thin film-like Fluon® ETFE Film is used in many large stadiums, including the Allianz Arena in Germany.
