Launch of ETI-CGC, a Platform for Industry-Academia Collaboration, with AGC Participation

—The University of Tokyo and Japan's leading companies consider paths and policies to achieve decarbonization—

The Energy Transition Initiative-Center for Global Commons (ETI-CGC), an industry-academia collaboration platform in which AGC (AGC Inc.; Headquarters: Tokyo, President: Yoshinori Hirai) participates, was launched on November 5.

ETI-CGC is an industry-academia collaboration platform conceived by the University of Tokyo's Center for Global Commons (CGC) with participation from leading Japanese companies in materials, energy, transportation, and infrastructure sectors that support its philosophy. By using the University of Tokyo's platform to promote inter-industry and inter-company collaboration, the ETI-CGC participants will consider and propose paths and policies that will enable both Japan as a whole and its industries to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The AGC Group has set the initiative of “promoting sustainability management” as one of the key strategies in its medium-term management plan, AGC plus-2023. With the goal of achieving net zero carbon by 2050, the AGC Group is working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its own production processes and developing and selling high-performance energy-saving glass and other products that contribute to achieving net zero carbon worldwide.

AGC joined ETI-CGC because it agreed with the following principles: "The success or failure of decarbonization will determine Japan's future in the world", "We need a scientific and integrated pathway to decarbonization for all of Japan", and "We aim to contribute to global carbon neutrality by creating a model that is useful for countries with diverse regional circumstances".

The AGC Group supplies various materials, such as architectural, automotive, and display glass; chemicals; and ceramics in about 30 countries and regions. AGC intends to contribute to the activities of the ETI-CGC based on the various knowledge it has gained through its businesses to date.

About ETI-CGC
