AGC Uses Generative AI to Turn Manufacturing Expertise into Organizational Knowledge
-Voice data supports knowledge transfer and more advanced improvement activities-
AGC (AGC Inc., Headquarters: Tokyo; President: Yoshinori Hirai), a world-leading manufacturer of glass, chemicals and other high-tech materials, has jointly developed SmartLogger® Voice with Computer Engineering & Consulting Ltd. (“CEC”; Headquarters: Tokyo; President: Takashi Himeno). The speech recognition-based data collection system is designed to streamline the collection of work logs at manufacturing sites.
AGC applies transcription and generative AI-based data structuring and analysis to the voice data collected by the system. This process converts shop-floor know-how and decision-making information into digital assets that can be used across the organization.
Conceptual overview of SmartLogger® Voice

Verification at AGC manufacturing sites confirmed reductions in the time required for work analysis and the preparation of knowledge-transfer materials. The verification also confirmed that tacit knowledge, such as the experience and decision-making criteria of skilled workers, can be accumulated as organizational knowledge. Rapidly organizing and sharing shop-floor information has also helped support more advanced data-driven decision-making.
Manufacturers face continuing challenges in improving productivity, addressing labor shortages, and transferring the knowledge and experience of skilled workers to the next generation. Much of this know-how exists in conversations and verbal explanations during daily operations and often goes unrecorded and underutilized. By using SmartLogger® Voice, AGC can continuously capture knowledge generated on the shop floor and manage it as a reusable digital asset.
AGC plans to expand the application of the system to areas including safety activities, equipment maintenance and knowledge management. Through these efforts, AGC aims to accelerate the digitalization of shop-floor knowledge and advance its value creation DX* initiatives.
The AGC Group has positioned the promotion of value creation DX as one of the key strategies under its medium-term management plan AGC plus-2026 . The Group is combining its manufacturing expertise with digital technologies to improve productivity, create new value and strengthen competitiveness. AGC will continue to explore the use of advanced technologies, including generative AI, to support the transformation of manufacturing operations and sustainable growth.
Use Case 1: Streamlining Shop-Floor Work Analysis by Reducing Analysis Time by 90% or More Compared with Conventional Approaches
AGC uses SmartLogger® Voice for shop-floor work analysis, which was previously conducted using stopwatches and video cameras. Workers verbally record the tasks they perform, and generative AI automatically organizes and analyzes the resulting data.
This approach has reduced work analysis time to one-tenth or less of the conventional level. It has also significantly reduced the workload associated with data collection and analysis, helping accelerate the PDCA cycle for data-driven improvement activities.
Use Case 2: Combining Experience, Intuition, and Data for Knowledge Transfer and Digital Knowledge Asset Creation
AGC uses SmartLogger® Voice to transfer the decision-making criteria and know-how of skilled workers to the next generation. Skilled workers verbally explain key decision points and the factors they consider when making decisions on the shop floor.
Generative AI then organizes and structures the content and converts it into formats such as knowledge-transfer materials, decision flows and Q&A documents. This process enables knowledge traditionally dependent on individual experience and professional judgment to be transformed into digital assets that can be shared and utilized across the organization.
