Fluon® ETFE Film to be used for Main Stadium and Swimming Stadium of the Olympic Games in Beijing, China

Asahi Glass Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Tokyo; President: Masahiro Kadomatsu) has received an order and started the delivery of fluororesin ETFE film for the roof of National Stadium, which is to be used as the main stadium, and also for "Beijing National Aquatic Center", which is expected to host aquatics events of the Olympic Games in Beijing, which the opening ceremony will be held on August 8, 2008. National Stadium, which is called as "Bird's Nest" because of the shape of its structure, will use about 50,000 square meters of fluororesin ETFE film. "Beijing National Aquatic Center", which is called as Watercube or [H2O]3 because of its shape, will use about 300,000 square meters of the film.

The product that was ordered is a high-performance fluororesin "Fluon® ETFE film" (tradename "AFLEX®" in Japan), which Asahi Glass produces in its entirety including all material. Given its superior properties, such as heat, chemical and weather resistance; anti-adhesion; excellent electrical characteristics; and transparency, the film has been used since its launch in 1975 in a wide range of fields, including electronics, aviation/space, photovoltaic cells, sound insulation bags and green houses. The Company ranks No.1 in worldwide production volume and sales of fluororesin ETFE foils.

In recent years, the Fluon® ETFE film has been increasingly used especially in Europe as a building material, and one of the best examples is the Allianz-Arena, football stadium in Munich, Germany. The film has some unique features, such as ; transparency with high light transmittance ; light weight enabling the light structure ; long durability ; flexibility for the design ; developing the design by printing on the surface of the film especially for the stadium ; developing the design by coloring, controlling the heat and light by printing, especially for the Aquatic Center. After success in Beijing, the market is expected to be expanded globally including Asia.

The Company will continue to provide solutions based on Fluon® ETFE film for use in construction to clients around the world, utilizing the potentiality for its integrated production including all material, and the special technology accumulated in the glazing business sector such as architectural glass, for enhancing the optical properties.
