AGC Receives an Excellence Award at the “9th SX Awards” for its Fluorine Resource Recycling Initiative
AGC (AGC Inc.; Headquarters: Tokyo; President: Yoshinori Hirai) has received an Excellence Award at the 9th SX Awards, organized by the Sustainable Management Promotion Organization (SuMPO), in recognition of its efforts to advance a circular economy for fluorine resources. The award was presented for the initiative titled “From recycled circular fluorite to Fluon™ PTFE: Building a Domestic Circular Economy for Fluorine Resources”.

Fluorine-based products offer excellent properties, including heat resistance, chemical resistance and electrical insulation. They are used across a wide range of industries, including the semiconductor, automotive, construction, and aerospace industries. However, natural fluorite, the primary raw material used in fluorochemical production, is concentrated in a limited number of regions. Consequently, ensuring a stable supply while reducing the environmental impact associated with natural-resource extraction has become an important challenge.
To address these challenges, AGC draws on its extensive expertise in fluorine chemistry to recover and recycle fluorine from waste generated at its own plants. AGC also uses recycled circular fluorite produced from fluorine-containing by-products generated by the semiconductor industry and other sectors. Through these initiatives, AGC is promoting the circular use of fluorine resources both within the AGC Group and across the broader value chain.
In addition, to enhance confidence in the use of recycled materials and make their circular value more visible, AGC uses third-party verification based on UL 2809 to verify the proportion of recycled raw materials used. AGC first completed third-party verification for Fluon™ PTFE, one of the most widely used fluoropolymers, and is gradually extending this initiative to other products.
The award recognized AGC's successful implementation of fluorine-resource recycling in high-performance materials, an area in which such initiatives have traditionally been difficult to realize. It also acknowledged AGC's efforts to reduce the use of natural fluorite and support a stable supply of raw materials, and the potential for broader benefits across industries that utilize fluorine-based materials.
Under its medium-term management plan AGC plus-2026, the AGC Group has positioned "Deepening Sustainability Management" as one of its key strategies. Going forward, AGC will continue to leverage its unique materials and technologies and actively contribute to the realization of a circular economy for fluorine resources.
